Abstract

The temperature dependence of the magnetic suceptibility of SmSb could not be explained by the simple model with crystal field and spin-orbit interaction, but it was necessary to introduce a Kondo type exchange of about 300 K due to a Γ8 state. The specific heat peak at TN in SmSb was not influenced by applied magnetic fields even up to 10 T. This suggests a strong competition between the Kondo and the usual exchange acting on the localized spin. The dHvA effect was observed above and below TN.
