Abstract

Cell removal and liquid-medium recovery are laboratory routine for cell biology and diagnosis. Removal of blood cells from a blood sample is the first step for rapid diagnosis of bacterial infection and biomolecular assays. Liquid-medium recovery from cell cultures is a key unit laboratory operation for functional cell-based assays such as proliferation, viability, and metabolism assays. Hydrophoresis is a passive approach for cell sorting and focusing, using an axial pressure gradient induced by the anisotropic channel geometry and steric effect between particles and channel structures. Grooved microchannels for hydrophoresis have been employed for blood cell applications and cell cycle synchronization. The device comprises expansion and contraction channel geometries inclined at an angle with respect to the vertical direction that yield autonomous particle ordering by hydrophoresis.
