Abstract

The variety and scope of interaction devices play a pivotal role in shaping user experiences in the realm of human–computer interaction (HCI). This chapter covers both traditional and modern interaction devices, emphasizing their unique characteristics and applications. Starting with keyboards and mice, this chapter traces the progression to modern input devices emphasizing the shift to the capability of interacting with computer systems through alternative means such as the eyes, mouth, and even brain activity. Devices like eye trackers, gloves, and specialized tools such as blow switches are also explored. This chapter also provides a concise overview of diverse output devices including visual technologies such as screens, projectors, e-ink, and VR–AR glasses. Discussion on auditory output explores loudspeakers, headphones, and piezoelectric transducers. Tactile and haptic feedback, including electric muscle stimulation and thermal mechanisms, are also covered. As a final point, this chapter explores olfactory and gustatory devices, offering additional insights into how technology interfaces with our senses.
