Heavy-fermion-like behavior in semiconductor Yb 3S 4

Abstract

The new material Yb 3S 4 can be successfully obtained by a mineralization method. For the crystal, we measured the electrical resistivity, the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heats under several magnetic fields. Although the electrical resistivity showed a semiconducting behavior with a 0.4-eV gap energy, the magnetic and thermal properties had typical Kondo-like behaviors. The anomalous properties seem to be due to the magnetic polaron.
